The Polikarpov I-153 was one of the fastest biplanes ever produced and first flew in 1938.

It first saw action in the far east in the summer of 1939 against the Japanese on the Manchurian border and then later in the Finnish War of 1939-40. It was then supplied to the Chinese in their struggle against the invading Japense.

When the Germans invaded in 1941 the type still represented a significant portion of the Russians fighter force.

Even though it suffered heavy losses against the Germans it remained in service until 1943, although utilised mostly in a ground attack role.
